Wow already the first week of student teaching is coming to an end!! Although I really do love this, I am pretty tired! I cannot wait to come back on Monday :).
Today we were learning about two-step bar models in math. There are so many different kinds! I really need to stop and think about how to really explain everything with great detail to my students. Sometimes we forget that even though they have so much capacity to learn, they is so much they do not know. Things that seem obvious to me are not obvious to them.
My cooperating teacher lives a pretty big distance from our school and she was snowed in! She was not able to make it to school today until the afternoon. This means that Miss Denko took over the morning! Nothing like diving right now :) Loved it! I did morning meeting, comparing bar models, and science. In science I read The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons. We talked about the phases of the moon. Great song to help students learn it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4zpRmUdu7I
In literacy, students practiced what they should be doing while reading: stop, think, and jot. They used post-its to mark various thoughts they had. When it came time for poetry, we learned about a Poet's Voice. Today we wrote poems that speak directly to the subject. With the solar system fresh in their minds, many students wrote many poems directly to the sun, moon, and planets! They came up with such great things! Today I attended my first PLC meeting! I love the idea of PLC and I am looking forward to attending more.
In literacy, I met a new friend in our classroom. His name is Rocky the Reader. Rocky says that "Reading is thinking" and has a brain full of things that we as readers need to be doing while reading. So far, my students have learned about making connections, visualizing, using schema, and questioning. I wonder what Rocky will teach us next about thinking while reading! We read My Neighbor's Dog is Purple to practice visualizing! My cooperating teacher only revealed parts of the poem at a time. Before the last stanza my students completed a "before" visual image. After the last stanza was read they completed an "after image". Loved it!! Poem below: My Neighbor’s Dog is Purple My neighbor’s dog is purple, Its eyes are large and green, its tail is almost endless, the longest I have seen. My neighbor’s dog is quiet, It does not bark one bit, but when my neighbor’s dog is near, I feel afraid of it. My Neighbor’s dog looks nasty, it has a wicked smile….. before my neighbor painted it, it was a crocodile. By: Jack Prelutsky Today is my first day of student teaching! I am so excited to begin this journey. It is going to be so great to finally do what I have been waiting to do - teach all day everyday! Of course it will not start off that way, but I will still be in the classroom which is the closest thing to exactly what I want to do! I have already helped my teacher set up in the beginning of the school year, met my students in September, visited in December, and came to help plan last week. I am no stranger to the school!
Today I learned the general order of Morning Meeting which will be the first element of the classroom that I will take over. I am so excited! In math, my students were learning bar modeling. I am so impressed by their knowledge! I am keeping a notepad with notes about what we are doing everyday, different books we use, and different classroom management strategies my teacher uses. So far I already have learned so much! |
