I believe that homework is something to support academic growth; I do not think it is something that should be frustrating or something that teaches children. It is my job to teach and homework should be extra practice to make sure that students understand what we are learning in class. If I assign 50 math problems this will be frustrating and tedious to students who do understand the concept and those who do not. Why should students who understand the concept practice it 50 times? I believe that after 5-10 problems if they understand it, that is enough. Now for a student who is struggling, why should they be put through so much pain trying to do something they do not understand?
If a child is struggling with homework, I do not want there to be frustrations. I would ask parents to write me a note saying there has been trouble so I can do my job and work with that child. Do not worry about making sure they complete it and get it all correct because although I LOVE the effort, I will not be able to accurately see what it is I should be doing in the classroom. Homework should also be a great resource for parents to see what we are learning in school!
One piece of "homework" that should be "assigned" every night is reading. The words "homework" "assigned" is in quotations because reading should not be considered homework! Reading should be fun for students and my goal is to make sure that my student see that.
Homework helps teach responsibility, independence, and develops study skills that they will use in the future!
